Environmental Sustainability - enabling the United States to sustain and improve environmental quality and services to maintain our quality of life.
Like complex organisms, ecosystems often display a progression of damage from environmental insults that may result in stress to and disappearance of key species. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is addressing these scientific challenges with the intent of developing suites of molecular level biomarkers that can quantitatively describe biodiversity, system behavior, and multiple stressors across levels, in the absence of genomic information.
Our goal is to identify biomolecular signatures associated with specific functions within an ecosystem, and build predictive capabilities that will recognize early warning signs of ecosystem stress and damage.
